BMW India has brought in the new latest international version of its acclaimed Z4 roadster into the country. Launched on 12 Oct 2009 in Mumbai, the Z4 will demand a price tag of Rs 59 lakh ex-showroom for the Z4 sDrive35i variant.

The sDrive35i is the 2009 Z4's top-of-the-line variant, featuring BMW's new dual-clutch 7-speed automatic gearbox. The three-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine makes a stonking 306PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. In cue with Beemer's sporty traditions, the new car also has Dynamic Drive control that let's the user choose between Normal, Sport and Sport + modes.

BMW already has its 6-series convertible on sale in India, and even though the Z4 shares its top-down traits with the 6, that is where the similarities end. The Z4 forms a completely different class of cars, smaller in size, a true two-seater in roadster fashion, but with great power and very manageable dimensions for nimble and agile handling. The 2009 model also has a major improvement over its predecessor - the car now comes with a foldable hard-top roof, and hence replaces both the coupe and cabriolet versions of the earlier model.

Antarctica's Dry Valleys, with their barren gravel-strewn floors, are said to be the most similar place on Earth to Mars. Its fascinating landscape, located within Victoria Land west of McMurdo Sound, get almost no snowfall, and except for a few steep rocks they are the only continental part of Antarctica devoid of ice. The terrain looks like something not of this Earth; the valley’s floor occasionally contains a perennially frozen lake with ice several meters thick. Under the ice, in the extremely salty water, live mysterious simple organisms, a subject of on-going research.

Ice caves are very different from normal caves. They have a strange feeling about them, as though they are not from this planet, and one has just temporarily stepped into their world when spelunking their depths.

There are many ice caves throughout the world, but the Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves in Austria are some of the largest known to man. They are located within the Tennengebirge Mountains near Salzburg and stretch for a remarkable 40 kilometers. Only a portion of the labyrinth is open to tourists but it's enough to get a taste of what the remaining network is like: a truly mesmerizing palate of Mother Nature's handicraft.

In the hot sun of summer, the water of Spotted Lake, located in British Columbia and Washington, evaporates and crystallizes the minerals, forming many white-rimmed circles: shallow pools that reflect the mineral content of the water in shades of blues and greens. It contains one of the worlds highest concentrations of minerals: magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts), calcium and sodium sulphates, plus eight other minerals and traces of four more, including silver and titanium.

The Indians soaked away aches and ailments in the healing mud and waters. One story cites a truce in a battle to allow both warring tribes to tend to their wounded in the Spotted Lake, "Kliluk".

This spectacular landform in Mauritania in the southwestern part of the Sahara desert, called the Richat Structure, is so huge with a diameter of 30 miles that it is visible from space. The formation was originally thought to be caused by a meteorite impact but now geologists believe it is a product of uplift and erosion. The cause of its circular shape is still a mystery.

The giant opencast mines of Rio Tinto create a surreal, almost lunar landscape. Its growth has consumed not only mountains and valleys but even entire villages, whose populations had to be resettled in specially built towns nearby. Named after the river which flows through the region-itself named for the reddish streaks that colour its water-Rio Tinto has become a landscape within a landscape. The river red water is highly acidic (pH 1.7—2.5) and rich in heavy metals.

This island simply blows away any notion about what is considered “normal” for a landscape on Earth, you’d be inclined to think you were transported to another planet - or traveled to another era of Earth’s history. Socotra Island, which is part of a group of four islands, has been geographically isolated from mainland Africa for the last 6 or 7 million years. Like the Galapagos Islands, the island is teeming with 700 extremely rare species of flora and fauna, a full 1/3 of which are endemic.
The climate is harsh, hot and dry, and yet - the most amazing plant life thrives there. Situated in the Indian Ocean 250 km from Somalia and 340 km from Yemen, the wide sandy beaches rise to limestone plateaus full of caves (some 7 kilometers in length) and mountains up to 1525 meters high. The trees and plants of this island were preserved thru the long geological isolation, some varieties being 20 million years old.

The Shilin (Chinese for stone forest) is an impressive example of karst topography. Its rocks are made of limestone and are formed by water percolating the ground’s surface and eroding away everything but the pillars. It’s known since the Ming Dynasty as the 'First Wonder of the World.'

Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni is perhaps one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. A magnificent area with an impressive salt desert (the world's largest), active volcanoes, tall cacti islands and geyser flats, it exists like an alien mirage, something completely out-of-this-world. For this month's cover, we asked graphic designer James Victore (that's his hand, above) to transcribe parts of Stephen King's short story "Morality" on the lovely Bar Refaeli. He spoke with us just before getting started.

ESQ: What's the medium?

JV: Shoe polish.

ESQ: Really?

JV: No, no. It's what body painters use, but body painting is kind of boring. We're trying to give it some energy.

ESQ: Did you map this out?

JV: To a certain degree, but it might change, and we have to be cool with that.

ESQ: What about practicing?

JV: I have an exquisite wife, and I practice on her. Also, we worked with three different models. Everyone is different. The

flesh is different, the curves are different.

ESQ: And how does Refaeli compare?

JV: She's a perfect canvas because her skin is so flawless. It's going to be amazing.

"I had to read her three times because the first read was a wash — I felt disoriented, I wasn't used to the medium, I was rapt by King's wordsmithing. So the real work began on the second and third passes. As I scanned each line, reading the words out loud, checking for trouble spots (afterward, not afterwards, for instance), Refaeli slowly — but all too perceptibly — moved her body according to whatever I needed to get a good look at. Which was distracting, but I thank her for it."

For a girl who admits to have grown up reading Mills and Boon, it is surprising to find that she is a traditionalist and would never make the first move. "Even if I had a strong crush on someone I would never make the first move. The guy would have to make two, three, four first moves," she giggles.
"I believe the guy needs to do the chasing, make the moves, set things up, etc. In that way I am conservative and a
traditionalist. I would like a guy to do things to surprise me, whisk me away. He has to be inventive. The usual candlelight dinner on the beach is a bit too staid for me. It could anything from planning a trip, like diving together, to introducing me to something new, to opening me up to a new experience. If I were to give suggestions for the date, it would be going for a movie, heading to a coffee shop after that, staying out all night, then heading to the beach at 5 am to watch the sunrise and getting into the water when no one else is around.

A great conversation turns me on completely. I love to meet men who can engage me like that. Then, I am wired. It is the best high for me. Else, I tune out very easily in a social environment.

And what kind of men are a complete no-no in her life?
"Men who show-off, brag and are not real."
"I was such an avid consumer of Mills and Boon that I even wrote three chapters of my own version once. However, now I have outgrown chick flicks and rom-com's. I need a nice emotional drama to keep me engaged. I also love watching period films, war films, spy thrillers, dramas and regular thrillers.
I love to do things that give me an adrenaline rush, like bungee jumping. I also learnt kite surfing recently. It took me 10 days to learn to manoeuver a kite. It is quite dangerous. But it was great fun.

LEGO F1: Ferrari Race Car

With about 12k-20k invested and 80,000 LEGO pieces later, the biggest and most lifelike LEGO F1 car was created. This Ferrari F1, based on the F2008, is 1:1 scale, which is apparently drivable was presented in Holland, more specifically in Amsterdam, at the annual ‘Lego World' event held there. We would love to have one.

Evolution: Super Eco friendly car

Different from convenient eco-friendly car, this concept car from Loremo AG, a German car corporation, is not a based on hybrid but on its weight: about 450kg, achieving a stunning 157mpg. The speed will go up to 160km/h on a 2 cylinder turbo-diesel engine. Another surprising part is that comes with a front wing door rather than having two side doors for the drivers to enter the vehicle.

Mattrack Truck: the skiing car

This is a standard truck where the wheels have been replaced by mattrack belts. The company -Mattrack- can apparently do this to any kind of 4×4 vehicle – from ATVs to 20 ton trucks. The short belts allow the Mattrack Truck to drive almost anywhere unless the snow gets too deep. If the snow gets to deep, longer belts are required (like on the Piston Bully). The short belts also make Mattrack Truck able to cross small creavasses, while larger creavasses require longer belts.

Peugeot Capsule: an escape pod car

Escape pods are nothing new to our collective consciousness. Hollywood writers have used this concept to save presidents from crashing planes to landing R2-D2 and C-3PO on Tatooine. Now designer Alp Germaner has dreamt up an escape pod that may not take you off planet but will certainly take you off road like never before. The “Peugeot Capsule” is a one person, off-road, electric vehicle inspired by the KLR 650 motorcycle. Complete with integrated GPS, LCD screens that double as rear-view mirrors, full time internet connectivity (for jungle porn of course) and comes with enough luggage space to make a weekend of it. Master Chief not included.

Eclectic: world's first energy-autonomous vehicle?

Claiming its creation is the world's first "energy-autonomous" vehicle, Venturi equipped this nerdy car, called Eclectic with a solar panel and a wind turbine so it can get power from the elements. It also has a plug for recharging from an outlet, as the panel and turbine combined give you only something like 14 miles a day. But electric power still beats gas. You are able to buy an Eclectic for about $31,500, according to a Venturi press release.

Business magazine Forbes magazine has released it's international list of this year's top-earning models. Which sexy ladies have the deepest pockets? Find out right here! 'The world's top earning model' is based on estimated earnings of models from June 2008 to June 2009. Four Brazilian models have found a place in the rankings. "(The) modelling industry has been hard-hit by the economic crisis, but the value of the beauties at the top is as strong as ever," the magazine noted.

1. Gisele Bundchen

Brazilian beauty Bundchen has topped the list of top-earning models. At 28, she has earnings to the tune of USD 25 million from numerous campaigns, including those for brands like Versace, True Religion jeans and Dior.2. Miss Moneybags: Heidi Klum

LTTE's women wing chief Thamilini arrested

The political wing leader of the LTTE women's force, who crossed into the government-held areas from the no-fire zone in northern Sri Lanka in the guise of a civilian, was arrested from a refugee camp.
Subramaniam Shivathai alias Thamilini, who came to the refugee camp with other civilians from Mullaitivu, during the last phase of the military operation was arrested at a welfare village in Vavuniya, a media report said.
Thamilini reportedly threw away her cyanide capsule and revolver before leaving LTTE-held area with other civilians. She had come to the government-controlled region along with the people escaping from Puthumathalan which was a 'No Fire Zone' at the time, and was with her mother and sister when she was arrested by a special team of police on Wednesday, authorities said.She told the police that she threw away her cyanide capsule and her pistol and passed off as a displaced person, the news website Asian Tribune said. Thamilini's mother, Subramaniam Gowri Wijayaraja and sister Maheshwari, had also accompanied her.
She joined the LTTE in 1991 and was elevated to the position of the organisation's political head after its leader Nesmia died in a clash with the Sri Lankan Army.Thamilini's another sister, Santhilan, was killed in 1998, during a clash with the security forces in Paranthan, the website said.
During interrogations she disclosed that she was attached to the office of Thamilchelvam, the political wing leader of the LTTE, who was killed in November 2007 in an air attack in Killinochi. Thamilini was appointed the political head of LTTE Women's Wing, after Nesmia, its previous leader was killed in a clash with the Army in Muhamalai.
With an LTTE registration number 1736, she was given the name Thamilini, by the outfit. She is currently being interrogated by intelligence officers and army investigators, the paper said.

Mexico Swine Flu - A Doctor's Report

Swine influenza virus (SIV) is caused by Orthomyxoviruses that are endemic to pig populations. SIV strains isolated to date have been classified either as Influenzavirus C or one of the various subtypes of the genus Influenzavirus A.

Swine flu, unlike bird flu, is able to pass from human to human contact. The 2009 swine flu outbreak is the spread of a new strain of H1N1 influenza virus that was first detected by public health agencies in March 2009. Local outbreaks of influenza-like illness were detected in three areas of Mexico, but the presence of this new strain was not discovered for a month.

Following this discovery in the parts of United States bordering Mexico, its presence was swiftly confirmed in the local outbreaks in Mexico, and in isolated cases elsewhere. By April 27, the new strain was confirmed also in Canada, Spain, and the United Kingdom and suspected in many other nations, with over 1,800 candidate cases.

The new strain is an apparent reassortment of several strains of influenza A virus subtype H1N1, including a strain endemic in humans and two strains endemic in pigs, as well as an avian influenza.

Reassortment is common in influenza viruses, due to the structure of their genome. This particular reassortment is consistent with a transmission of swine influenza from pig to human combined with the mixing of two viral infections in the same person.

In April both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expressed serious concerns about this novel strain, because it apparently transmits from human to human, has had a relatively high mortality rate in Mexico, and because it has the potential to become a flu pandemic.

On April 25, 2009, the WHO determined the situation to be a formal “public health emergency of international concern”, with knowledge lacking in regard to “the clinical features, epidemiology, and virology of reported cases and the appropriate responses”.

Government health agencies around the world also expressed concerns over the outbreak and are monitoring the situation closely.

Recommendations to prevent infection by the virus consist of the standard personal precautions against influenza. This includes frequent washing of hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitizers, especially after being out in public. People should avoid touching their mouth, nose or eyes with their hands unless they've washed their hands. If people do cough, they should either cough into a tissue and throw it in the garbage immediately or, if they cough in their hand, they should wash their hands immediately.

Many countries confirmed that inbound international passengers will be screened. Typical airport health screening involves asking passengers which countries they have visited and checking whether they feel or look particularly unwell.

On April 27, the CDC recommended the use of Tamiflu and Relenza for both treatment and prevention of the new strain.

Some physicians in the US are recommending the use of masks when in public. The purpose of a face mask is to effectively cover a person’s mouth and nose so that if a person is around someone who is infected, there is a decreased likelihood of transmission.

Questions and answers about swine flu

Mexico is contending with an outbreak of swine flu, suspected in the deaths of dozens of people and sickening perhaps 1,000. In the United States, at least eight cases have been confirmed with the infection, all of them in California and Texas; only one person was hospitalized. Here are some questions and answers about the illness:

Q. What is swine flu?

A. Swine flu is a respiratory illness in pigs caused by a virus. The swine flu virus routinely causes outbreaks in pigs but doesn’t usually kill many of them.

Q. Can people get swine flu?

A. Swine flu viruses don’t usually infect humans. There have been occasional cases, usually among people who’ve had direct contact with infected pigs, such as farm workers. “We’ve seen swine influenza in humans over the past several years, and in most cases, it’s come from direct pig contact. This seems to be different,” said Dr. Arnold Monto, a flu expert with the University of Michigan.

Q. Can it spread among humans?

A. There have been cases of the virus spreading from human to human, probably in the same way as seasonal flu, through coughing and sneezing by infected people.

Q. What are the symptoms of swine flu?

A. The symptoms are similar to those of regular flu — fever, cough, fatigue, lack of appetite.

Q. Is the same swine flu virus making people sick in Mexico and the U.S.?

A. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the Mexican virus samples match the U.S. virus. The virus is a mix of human virus, bird virus from North America and pig viruses from North America, Europe and Asia.

Q. Are there drugs to treat swine flu in humans?

A. There are four different drugs approved in the U.S. to treat the flu, but the new virus has shown resistance to the two oldest. If you suspects any symptoms of Swine flu, contact your physician.

Q. Does a regular flu shot protect against swine flu?

A. The seasonal flu vaccine used in the U.S. this year won’t likely provide protection against the latest swine flu virus. There is a swine flu vaccine for pigs but not for humans.

Q. Should residents of California or Texas do anything special?

A. The CDC recommends routine precautions to prevent the spread of infectious diseases: wash your hands often, cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, avoid close contact with sick people. If you are sick, stay at home and limit contact with others.

Q. What about traveling to Mexico?

A. The CDC has not warned Americans against traveling to Mexico but advises that they be aware of the illnesses there and take precautions to protect against infections, like washing their hands.

Just a couple of days back, Ranbir's sister Riddhima told to a news channel journo on TV that she doesn't think Deepika is Ranbir's girlfriend and that she knows Deepika only as one of his good friends.
